Developed a comprehensive digital platform for a Chicago-based restaurant, integrating online reservations with back-of-house operations. The system streamlined workflows and resulted in a 40% increase in table turnover during peak hours.
The Business & The Problem
TastyHub is a high-volume restaurant based in Chicago, Illinois. With over 120 tables and a bustling bar area, they faced severe operational bottlenecks that hurt their bottom line. Prior to our collaboration, the restaurant relied on a manual host stand logbook, telephone-only reservations, and a separate, disconnected third-party online ordering system that charged hefty 15% commissions on every order.
The consequences of this manual setup were clear. Customers frequently experienced busy phone lines, leading to lost reservations. During weekend peaks, walk-in wait times soared to 45 minutes, even though several tables sat empty in the back due to poor coordination. Staff manually printed order tickets from the ordering system and physically carried or keyed them into the kitchen's point-of-sale system, leading to transcription errors and slow service.
Server assignments were highly unbalanced, causing kitchen delays and server burnout. General Manager Marcus Vance realized that relying on fragmented tools was hurting both customer satisfaction and table turnover. TastyHub needed a single, integrated digital system to manage their operations end-to-end, automate bookings, and cut out third-party middleman fees.
Our Engineering Approach
To solve Marcus's issues, we designed and engineered an end-to-end custom Digital Restaurant Operations Platform from scratch. The solution comprised:
1. **Low-Friction Online Booking Wizard:** A highly responsive, mobile-first booking interface that allows diners to reserve tables, select dining areas (e.g., patio, main room, bar), and receive instant automated confirmations via SMS and email.
2. **Back-of-House (BoH) & Front-of-House (FoH) Dashboard:** A synchronized, real-time table management console. When a guest arrives, the host assigns them a table with a tap. Waitstaff can update table states (Occupied, Dirty, Clean, Reserved) on their handheld tablets, giving the host instant visibility.
3. **Commission-Free Online Ordering & Payments:** A seamless digital ordering flow integrated directly into the restaurant's menu pages. Customers can order takeout or delivery, customize dishes, and pay securely using Stripe, eliminating third-party portal fees entirely.
4. **Intelligent Server Seating Algorithm:** A custom-coded load balancer that suggests optimal table assignments based on the active server rotation and current guest counts, ensuring fair work distribution and faster table preparation.
5. **Sanity CMS Integration:** A custom content editing interface allowing Marcus and his chef to update menus, change daily specials, adjust operating hours, and announce events in real-time with zero technical knowledge.
Architecturally, we chose Next.js App Router for server-side pre-rendering to optimize performance and organic SEO rankings, paired with Tailwind CSS for high-performance responsive layouts. To handle real-time synchronization across different device terminals without costly server maintenance, we implemented an optimized React state syncing system paired with short-polling cache validation, ensuring all screens stay accurate within 500 milliseconds.
